Instruction in literary terminology focusing on conflict, plot diagrams, characterization, and imagery with a review of similes, metaphors, setting, and symbolism. To increase students’ word variety and power, this course utilizes Wordly Wise, a vocabulary development program that continues the scope and sequence of the course begun in fourth grade. Writing instruction focuses on paragraph development where students are asked to find textual evidence to support their ideas.

Over the summer, students completed active reading strategies while reading the novel. After sections of reading, student focused on specific literary aspects: setting, conflict, plot elements, imagery, and characterization.
